So recently, the lovely people of Kopi Coffee sent me a small sample of their gourmet ground to test out on the boyfriend and see how it liked it. My other half drinks coffee every day and following a flurry of coffee related Christmas presents this past year I was inspired to make him a personalised gift in order to test this new coffee in the best of circumstances. Having seen various Sharpie related ceramic customisations floating around the world of Pinterest I was keen to try it myself. Apparently, it was a simple as using your sharpie directly on to a ceramic item of your choosing, baking it in the oven for half an hour and voila, you have newly customised tableware. I took two large, plain, graspable mugs from my favourite shop in town, Priddy Essentials, and scribbled away the following simple designs… Then we put them in the oven and waited. This is what happened; One worked, and one…well, it went a bit squiffy. However, we decided to have a cuppa in them anyway and the good news is? I quote “That coffee is WELL nice” So, bad craft, good coffee. The mugs are fabulous, it’s just the writing [...]

Well, never before have I been asked to include so many little details on one quilt and actually made it work! This brand new quilt for Logan was a christening present, not a birthing day gift and has the date of said Christening to prove it. It also has a loganberry included above his name, team colours of a significant college basketball team and a childhood doodle that mother and godmother adorned all of their childhood letters with, of which I understand there were many. Just in case you were wondering, it is the sheep that was the doodle. As an aside I’ve now switched to 100% cotton wadding and I can’t believe I didn’t do it sooner. It’s so much nicer to sew with and I’m far happier with the finish. This is the dawn of a new day!!

A lovely lady who goes by the name of Vicky contacted me some time ago with a view to creating her a personalised kitchenaid cover. We chatted back and forth over some ideas and colours, during which time, she spotted my bed bolsters and ordered one of those too as a gift for her sister! Now I don’t brand Vicky lovely lightly, she was very patient during a busy time for me and she was patient whilst I got over an illness and then also patient whilst we all got over a bank holiday…. However, she now has both ordered items and after a long wait (of my own doing) I can share them with you! First up, the kitchenaid cover. Made in colours to match Vicky’s kitchen, funny that. And also embroidered with the message “Mum’s Secret Ingredient is Love” The cover is fully lined and has an open back with ribbon ties. Modelled here beautifully by my sewing machine. The message is hand embroidered and I also added some bunting down the sides to add a little summin summin to the longer stretches of fabric. You’ll be able to see more details of the cover on my FACEBOOK [...]

Each time they asked no baby names had yet been revealed and so inspiration for a theme was sought elsewhere! Aaron is married to a very beautiful Colombian woman called Luz Angela whom he met in Mexico and so his brother requested EL GUAPO which means “the handsome one” in the native tongue accompanied by a Mexican wrestling mask. It’s close to being my most obscure request to date and I love it! Hope you do too…now I must find out the new arrivals ACTUAL name…

I have done one in the past but that is all so it’s not very often I get asked to make a quilt for a “Dad” …which is a shame really because I’m sure Dad’s like to be warm too! Let’s hear it for the DADS!! A lovely lady called Kristina contact me a little while ago about making a personalised quilt for her Dad, also known as Pops, as a gift for his 65th birthday. Her Dad has not been in the best of health and so spends a lot of time in a chair. Her thoughts on a quilt for him to keep his legs warm was touching and I’m honoured she asked me to make it for him. Because the quilts I normally make are cot size I extended this particular quilt by both a vertical and horizontal row of stripes to ensure it was big enough to wrap around and under Dads legs… With a little bit of snow still on the ground I hope it keeps him nice and toasty during his birthday celebrations!

This may seem a little familiar as I’m a big fan of pasta sauces (these days without the pasta) and a lot of them have the same core ingredients…however, each has it’s own little twist and today’s is no exception after a visit to a new stall at my local market! We had a few fresh olives to start. Then we had this! YUM YUM. Serves two…I eat a lot of sauce when i don’t eat the pasta! Ingredients Big glug of olive oil 1 red onion 1 red chili 1 small fiery cooking chorizo (from Uppingham market if you can!) 1/2 lb of lean minced beef 1 beef stock cube four large vine tomatoes 100g homemade chunky red pesto (also from Uppingham market!) Finely chop your onion and chilli and cook over a medium to high heat until softened. Remove the skin from your chorizo and chop it in to chunks before adding it to the pan. Cook it together in the oil with the onions for a few minutes and then add the beef. Stick with these ingredients for about ten minutes until your beef is thoroughly browned and cooked through. Stir at regular intervals so everything absorbs [...]

I believe it is now the case that everyone destined for a ‘save the date’ card has received it, including those flung far and wide around the globe. This can only mean one thing… that I can share them with you, their concept and creation, without spoiling anything for those who awaited their little envelope in the post. Despite the fact that a few people we sent them to didn’t know what they were (bloody Brits) they were always going to be an important part of the process. For me, the save the date cards are a crucial start to the whole activity of building our wedding. They plant the seed, they mark the bench and they set the tone for the rest of the stationery, theme, colours and they say “Hey! We’re getting married soon, look out for other exciting stuff coming your way!” And do you know what else? Because I’m also making the invitations…our save the date cards give me time to get the invites finished and perfected without feeling panicked about the fact that everyone may already have plans for the date we have chosen. They give me respite. And for that, I am grateful.
This here is my 300th DO IT MOMMA blog entry and so I thought it fitting in the current run of wedding themed posts to dedicate this one to the love of my life. It’s time for you all to meet the groom. This is Alex; Alex is the man I’m going to marry on 6th July 2013 and he may end up killing me following this post but here are just a few of the reasons why I love him so much… I love Alex because he’s game for a laugh. I love Alex because he dances with me. (photo credit - http://www.milkbottlephotography.co.uk) I love Alex because even though he says I dance like an idiot when I’m drunk, he clearly does too. I love Alex because he’s good with kids. I love Alex because he has a massive soft side and cries at Christmas movies. I love Alex because he helps me conquer fears. I love Alex because he’s big enough to protect me and wants to, but he’s also humble enough to let me protect him. I love Alex because he makes me giggle.
It’s been a little while since I had the opportunity to make a bed end, designed as such to go over the foot of a child’d bed and long enough to grow with them to a double. Should they want it to of course. Funnily enough the last one of these I made was for the same family, and dedicated to Elwood’s older sister, Lorelai. To commemorate his 1st birthday, mom Fay asked for his own bed end to include a dedication to his two grandfathers. Elwood has both of their names as his middle names and strangely, both grandfathers in question served in the navy on the ‘HMS Formidable’. As you can see, the finished quilt followed a nautical theme and I hand embroidered the name of the ship on to a central anchor to tie it all together. Happy 1st birthday to Elwood! I do hope he likes his personalised keepsake when he grows up. xx

Yesterday I went wedding dress shopping with the intention of buying nothing, I just wanted to have the experience with my mom, my sister in law and my niece. I wanted to try on big ridiculous frocks that didn’t suit nor flatter me and have a little giggle at the same time. I wanted to come away more confident than ever that the shape and style I planned to make for myself was the right route to take and I wanted to be confident in the choice I had made. I certainly enjoyed the experience and had a giggle but as for the rest of it, that just didn’t happen. It’s a girls prerogative to change her mind! Please believe I didn’t mean to. It was not my intention. I actually really WANTED to make my dress. It all started out like I intended, I tried on lots of dresses that were never going to be for me. Like this very sparkly number that really was quite dazzling but altogether NOT ME. However much it was a hit with my beautiful little bridesmaid…it still wasn’t ME. I booked appointments at stores I would never ordinarily have considered had I gone [...]
