Making My Own

26th May, 2012

I’m up early this morning doing my last minute check list before I head off to Buckinghamshire to photograph a wedding in this beautiful sunshine and it got me thinking… I am more sure than ever that I am going to make my own wedding dress!

I have been mulling over this for a while now (even before I was engaged, just don’t tell him that!) and despite the fact that it could be stressful, and challenging…it’ll also be utterly fabulous when I pull it off and get to marry my man in something wonderful that I have made.  AND I WANT TO DO IT!  Besides, what I find more stressful is spending money that I don’t have and after a similar altercation with the perfect wedding venue at very high cost we’ve had a discussion about stripping things right back and starting again.  Suddenly I’m back to being excited again and everything is lain out in front of us just waiting to be personalised and perfected!

Making my dress is a creative challenge that I am willing to take on and each and every time I read a story or a blog entry about a bride who made her own I’m inspired to do so more and more.

A friend forwarded on this lovely piece from LOVE MY DRESS where the bride had visualised her own dress and created it so beautifully.  It seems perfect for her and for their day…and just looking at the pictures of the face the of her other half seeing her for the first time quite simply melts my heart.

Then I read THIS, from the ever inspiring Jasmine Star and realised that I don’t really know why it’s been so hard to make this decision…what am I afraid of?  Worst comes to the worst I buy one…I’ll give myself enough time to make mistakes, and correct them, and alter things…so I should create my own dress quite simply because I can.  In her own words “here’s to pushing…and dreaming…and creating. Because you can.”  I’m all for it!

I know what I want my dress to look like, it’s made up of lots of dresses I have seen and loved but wouldn’t quite suit my body shape because of that bit there or it goes out in the wrong place there.  Best way to get round that is pull all the best bits together and make them work for me.  And don’t worry…I’ll still try some on, I wouldn’t deny myself that experience for all the tea in China.  In fact, I’m going to take one day, a very large budget and try on every single dress I can’t afford, just to make the most of it!

So, with that said, I can’t share my dress design with you…obviously!  And I really don’t want to give away any secrets until the big day so I’ll share a picture of what it most definitely WILL NOT look like instead!!
