It’s not fair, but every one does it. You know what I’m talking about, when people rub it in that they’re on holiday and you’re not. Sucks doesn’t it? Well apologies, but that is what I’m about to do!
I’m currently sunning myself on a beach in the Dominican Republic. “Then why are you working?!” I hear you cry. Fact of the matter is I’m not really, I wrote this blog post before I left and just inserted the picture before hitting publish. With that in mind please excuse me if my tenses get a bit muddled throughout.
In preparation I made myself a little something especially for the trip that I want to share with you. A new bikini! And at this point I have another confession. Not only did I cheat by writing this blog before boarding the plane, but I made the bottom half of this bikini over two years ago. You can see the original, complete bikini here in my WEAR IT gallery. The problem with that bikini was that I made it without any research about making bikinis and believe it or not it’s harder than it looks! I stuck in some underwiring and hoped for the best…and on a curvy girl like me…I probably should have hoped for more! I had to abandon the original top and start again.
Finally getting round to recreating the criss cross design that I loved so much, this time I used moulded cups and built the bikini top around them. Unfortunately I couldn’t find the original star fabric so I had to take one block colour from the bottoms and work with that instead, I think the red works pretty well. Good job I like mix n’ match bikinis! The back is a simple tie as is the halterneck that just loops through the twist on the front of the top. It’s not perfect and I don’t dare show you the inside but it looks OK…I think?!
Oh look it’s me on the beach! Did I mention I was on holiday?
I left both the ties long at the back as it adds another little something different and makes it a bit more of a “fashion” bikini rather than a performance one. It certainly keeps me contained and doesn’t feel like it would fall off but if you’re looking for support and something that might stand up to a rogue wave I don’t think this is the bikini top for you. However, for lying still and sunbathing you can’t beat it! Let’s put it this way, I’ve got some design work to do for the bigger busted girl yet for those who are slightly less chesty I’ve made it previously without the cups and if you don’t need the security it could be spot on.
I’ll keep going till I get it spot on, I like having a development project to work on…now I just need another holiday so I have the perfect excuse.
